My task manager does not show any detail now since i have update my windows?

since i have updated my windows xp my task manager does not work properly it dose not show any detail it only give me option tolog off or disconnect it even does not show caption ons.i use alt+f4 to close it(since i update my windows xp it says validation faliure purchese a genuin windows lisense)and i can not purchase it i want my task manager working again without purchasing it(i restore my computer for it but then internet xplorer does not work plz help
