My throat is killing me. What should I do?

I have Coxsackie A virus and it is so painful i can't even explain it. I've gone to the doctor and they told me to take pain killers and gargle with this nasty crap, every time i gargle with it i nearly puke. I was wondering if anybody else had any ways to get rid of the pain? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
