Oil Pressure Gauge Zero?

I have a 2001 Camaro, 3.8L V6 56,000kms done. Last night while i was heading home, i suddenly saw the check gauges light came on, the oil pressure gauge went to zero and the engine went off instantly. There was no noise, no leakage, no missing or anything unusual. They car didn't start after that. While I was waiting for the tow truck, it was around 40 minutes I thought to gave it another try by starting it and it got started on the first ignition, the check gauges light went off and the car started running normally... Does anybody have an idea what could be the reason, and is there something wrong with my car? Plus what does the pil pressure gauge exactly mean/show?
