Sleep disorder question?

My friend has a sleep disorder where he doesn't go through REM sleep, i don't know much about it but I know that he can run off of nearly no sleep and he is a heavy sleeper. What is this called? I don't want to ask him but i want to know more about the disease: other symptoms, treatments, life-span, etc
