What brand of laptop computer is recommended?

I am saving up for a laptop and I would like some suggestions on good brands that I could look at. I have heard that Toshiba laptops are top of the line and they last quite well. I have heard that the new Macintosh laptops are not as durable as others might be. I have heard from several people that DELL really stinks when it comes to their laptop computers. Sony Vaio has also worked well for some people I know. What brands do you recommend? Which brands have the better quality overall performance and least issues with hardware and software? I am wanting this laptop to last a while.
