I am travelling to mexico with a valid visa to mexico and am zimbabwe citizen. Do I need a transit visa in usa?

Yes, absolutely. You will not even be allowed to board the aircraft coming to the USA without it. Upon arrival in the USA you and your luggage will have to clear both US immigration and US customs before being allowed to board the flight to Mexico.
